Senator Alessandro ALFIERI was born in Varese, Lombardy, on February 2, 1972.

He graduated in Economics from the Bocconi University in Milan.

In 1997 he joined the diplomatic service at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As a diplomat he dealt with the Horn of Africa and the Balkans areas.

After leaving the diplomatic career he joined the Democratic Party (S&D).

During his political engagement he has held various political and elective positions:

– candidate for mayor in his city, Varese, in 2002, joining the municipal council. At the same time he held the position of coordinator of the political project Ulivo by Romano Prodi in his city Varese;

– subsequently, with the birth of the Democratic Party in 2007, he first became Regional Deputy Secretary of the Democratic Party in Lombardy and in 2010 he was elected Regional Councilor. Reconfirmed for the second term in 2013, he assumed the position of Group Leader in the Regional Council for the Democratic Party, until his election as Regional Secretary of the Democratic Party in 2013.

He was Head of the International Relations of the Province of Milan and followed the promotion abroad of Milan’s candidacy for the 2015 Expo.

He was elected to the Italian Senate in 2018.

He is head of the Democratic Party delegation to the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee.

He was a member of the delegation of the Italian Parliament to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

On 9 June 2021 he was designated by the President of the Italian Senate as the representative of the Italian Parliament at the Assembly of the Conference on the Future of Europe. Now he is a member of Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE.
